The Gubernatorial recall threatens the health and safety of California’s undocumented folx, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities.
This is a right-wing drive to undermine equitable, inclusive, and just policies that California’s frontline communities support, which include protections for undocumented families, water conservation and efficiency measures, curbs on fossil fuel extraction, investments in regenerative energy, clean transportation, elevating environmental justice and just transition issues, and addressing the needs of people and families experiencing houselessness. These measures are also necessary to finally make progress on deadly smog and catastrophic climate change.
The recall is forcing state resources (an estimated $276 MILLION taxpayer dollars) to be expended at a time when we should be focused on a Just Recovery as a means to respond, rebuild, and reinvest in the pressing needs of economically and environmentally burdened communities. The COVID-19 health pandemic and climate change impacts are two critical issues that highlight the health inequities experienced by our members and are inextricably linked in the people most impacted. As made evident in 2020, Covid-19 disproportionately impacted the health and well-being of Black and Latinx communities compared to any other demographic. This health disparity was compounded by the fact that people of color communities are exposed to higher rates of environmental pollution, which contributes to health conditions that make people more vulnerable to respiratory diseases like coronavirus, asthma and lung disease. More troubling is that these same communities suffer additional harm from lack of access to healthcare or denial of it due to residency status. The health and safety standards to protect communities is imperative.
We are steadfast in the fight to address systemic racism, and whole-heartedly reject the recall.
We are in solidarity with California’s undocumented, and Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and people of color communities in our fight against white-supremacy, cisheteropatriarchy, and xenophobic policies and actions. Rejecting the recall sends a clear message to right-wing forces and polluting industries looking to strip away environmental protections and resources from frontline communities.
We refuse to let Republican extremists hinder the advances made towards protections for environmental justice communities, which ultimately benefits all Californians. Our state must continue to focus resources that address the myriad of impacts associated with climate change, such as drought, heat waves, increased smog, increased wildfires, power outages, flooding, sea-level rise, and expanding vector-borne diseases.
Frontline communities have the solutions to address decades of environmental racism. Activating voters is just one action to move us closer to push our state to becoming more responsive to the needs of people by voting for candidates that align with our values, who will work towards progressive policies for clean air, clean soil, clean water and protecting the health of people.
